We pick you up in Moshi. The drive to Makoa Farm, which is located near the mountain village Machame, takes about 30 minutes. The farm, founded in 1901, is located at 1,070 meters on the southern slope of Kilimanjaro. The 143-hectare estate is operated since 1999 by the German veterinarian couple Elisabeth and Laszlo. The Animal Rescue Center (Kilimanjaro Animal C.R.E.W.), which you will visit with us, is located on the farm. The rescue center is a safe haven for healthy, orphaned and injured animals.
If possible, the animals are re-released in the wilderness. But some may not be released anymore because of their injuries and are now permanent residents of the rescue center. During the approximately 2-hour guided tour, you will be accompanied by an English-speaking staff member of the animal rescue center.
Your knowledgeable guide will tell you everything worth knowing about the individual animals, including the often sad history of how they came to the rescue center. You have the opportunity to get to know some of the animals up close and if possible, you can also help with the feeding of some animals. Current inhabitants of the rescue center include e.g. vervet and blue monkeys, baboons, mongooses, smaller antelope species, a cheetah and a serval, as well as various species of birds such as the Marabu stork or the secretary bird.
Makoa farm itself has specialized in multi-day horseback safaris in the western area of the Kilimanjaro, there are currently about 20 horses on the farm. After the tour we drive you back to Moshi.
